I purchased travel insurance for a trip that was going to cost about $850. My spouse came down with a really vicious cold and there is no way we were going to get on an airplane, but it was over in a day. The insurance cost $27. The maximum claim is $300.00 (which, they figure, is the cost that the airlines charge for rescheduling flights). This was during the weekend when doctors are generally not available except at the Emergency Room. Here's the kicker: They won't pay unless you provide a note from your doctor saying that you are sick. The cost of getting any sort of medical comment during the weekend will exceed their maximum payout. By the time we get in front of a non emergency doctor, my spouse be well enough to fly, and even if that were not the case, the actual cost (that is, not counting what our medical insurance would pay) of a routine doctor's visit is over $90.00. Since, under these circumstances, we would not ordinarily have consulted with a doctor, we'll end up paying $90 (plus the $27 original insurance) so that we can have proof of sickness enough to claim $300. Re-arranging our lives to actually get to a doctor will easily cost the remaining $183. I can see doing it with a higher maximum (we'll certainly incur more than $300 in changing plans) - but with such a low maximum, how can we say its worth it if they're require medical sign off? moreResolved Question: nonrefundable and I tihnk we are in our rights?
These rights I tink we should have and non refundable? Here is why I ask this, I think we should be in your rights for this and toi ask of nonrefundable tickets of? here is why I ask this, I think we should be in your rights for this: I think one should be in their rights to decline to fly (Travel) when their flight is cancelled and their trip is delayed to a certain point. I hope they do not penalize you for rescheduling the date of your trip when your flight WAS cancelled and the rebooked flight will get you there too late, ONE IS WITHIN THEIR RIGHTS TO DECLINE TO TRAVEL THAT DAY WITHOUT Penality I mean if they offer you a flight within the time of travel and you turn it down, will they then penalize you. AND OF THIS, if you are connecting flights and if you get to the connector Airport (Not your final destination), is that the point of no return from the trip. That should not be as whta if you get there and donot have much time to get to your final destination due to a short layover (ie the flight left late, or you had a long ways to go and it took a long time to get off the plane) OR IF YOU GET TO THE TRANSFER CITY AND YOUR FLIGHT TO YOUR DESTINATION IS CANCELLED, i either happens will they let your reschedule your trip if the flight they book you on will get you there too late? IF those two thinkgs happen, you should be within your rights to decline to travel and have flight back home if your flight will get you sooo late your trip is in vien. if both happen (short layover or weather in transfer city), will they put you on the next scheduled flight leaving. IS when you get to leg one, too late????? I WILL NOT GO ON A TRIP WITH JUST ENOUGH TIME TO GO HOME. and will ticket protector insurance cver this if you lose your trip. What if you lose your whole trip if you miss your connection, will they future credit the rest of your ticket if you want to redo the trip. I AM SORRY FOR BEING A PAIN of this but I fear the airlines don't care if your trip is ruined or what happens if you are stuck in the airport that logn! they can WAVE THESE RULES. but what will they say, "you made the decision to go another time or cancel your trip (Though my flight was cancelled and the new flight would get me there too late) but we offered you a flight and you turned it down" AM I Right that if weather cancels your flight, YOU WILL NOT GET ONE SPECK OF HELP FROM THE AIRLINES? FOr nonrefundable tickets, when will they give you a refund and what circumstance, will it be if your flight is cancelled and your flight will get you to your trip late. How often do they put you on another airline HOW COMMON IS getting stuck in the airport for 3-4 days (what if after the weather resolves and the planes to leave after the weather are booked what happens to the stranded passengers), if it happens will they give you a rent a car, money for food and hotel?? I Wouldnt want to sit in the airport that long Though I have a laptop, I would run out of things to do. being in the airport that long is as close to jail as you can get!!! AND WHAT IF I Was getting married and my flight was cancelled when I was set to go home 2-3 days before my wedding and I could not make it home for my wedding, will they try to get me home. if that happens I WILL ASK THE DESK AGENT TO BUMP SOMEONE OFF FOR ME!!! OR even bribe people into giving me their tickets. I WILL ONLY Ask the desk agent to bump someone off if my flight is cancelled and I am stranded for days if the flight they put me on is where I wont make it by my birthday (MY BIRTHDAY IS SEVERELY IMPORTANT TO ME!! AND I Want to enjoy it and spend it with my friends and family, not sit in the airport waiting for my flight), if I am one step away from getting fired from a job and I will miss a few days of work due to my flight getting canceled or if I am getting married and my flight is canceled and I can't get home for my wedding! moreResolved Question: Advice on starting a non-profit organization to operate a small FAA part 135 operation in Alaska?
I have the opportunity to go into business with my cousin/colleague by buying out a small FAA Part 135 non-scheduled air charter business in Interior Alaska that we are both employed as pilots for. The company has a fuel truck, a Cessna U206F Stationair 6 on wheels, and floats for it are included. There is also a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser on wheels, that is not included in the sale. The owner is willing to sell the whole company to us for $120K, not including the PA-12. He will take $20K down and finance us at 7% for 5 years. As of yet, neither of us has the financial means nor have been able to secure loans to outright buy the business or cover the $20K down payment. The company has been in operation for 30+ years and the current owner (son of the original founder) is ready to hang up his hat and retire (he has made a very well living from his airline and other business ventures). This company once was much larger, with scheduled flights throughout Interior Alaska, many more aircraft, and pilots. Due to various reasons including slower business in hunting/guiding operations, closings of nearby goldmines and general economic recession, flying business in Alaska is not as profitable as it once was. However, once aspect of the business has not seen recession. That is of local residents and natives needing to travel through the state for personal/medical/professional reasons. Through my own observation throughout my life, and being an Alaska Native myself, (mostly Yupik Eskimo along with a few Eurpoean descents) I think a non-profit orginization providing air transportation services to the peoples of Alaska (native and non-native) would better serve the interests of the residents in a state that almost completely depends on aviation for normal day-to-day life as well as emergency medical service. I was raised in Alaska, around aircraft, have been flying for over 10 years with 6 years professional experience and have watched the cost of flying within the state more than triple. Having the professional experience I do, as well as professional contacts as managers and pilots, (current and former) of several air carriers in the state, I also know of the direct and indirect operating costs and the profit margins associated with operating aircraft charter businesses. From my experience profit margins of $100-$200 per hour of aircraft operation are very common (small business, low-overhead, to larger high-overhead part 135 scheduled operators). My former employer operating a scheduled commuter/charter business with 2 Piper Cherokee 6's and a Piper Navajo Chieftain was netting just over $200,000 in profit annually, with just 2 pilots, the owner and myself. I understand costs of an airline, including office overhead, aircraft loans, fuel, maintenance, pilot payroll, insurance, as well as other maintenance surpises unavoidable with aircraft. My question is, could it really be feasible to run a "non-profit airline", or are my figures a bit off the mark? Many airlines (both large and very small) have failed miserably trying to MAKE a profit. Could an airline possibly survive by being able to substantially lower prices while remaining solvent, and would this really make enough difference to ramp up business enough to be successful? I am working on a business plan to pitch to the board of directors of my native corporation to gain interest in such a venture. Operating a non-profit flightschool run completely on grants, scholarships, and donations to increase local/native hire is another vision of mine (I earned my commercial pilot ratings the hard way, blood, sweat, and tears to pay for school, for an individual with any less financial means would be a dream buster) Applying for grants and scholarship funding was nothing but a waste of time and a hinderance to achieving my goals. Even in a receding economy, aviation will not go away in Alaska. I would really appreciate input on this matter, thank you all who took the time to read through this long-winded question. If any of you have a better idea, I'm open to suggestions. moreResolved Question: Advice on creating a non-profit FAA Part 135 non-scheduled air charter service?

when does the airport not and will pay for ones hotel if they are stranded in the airport?? if one will be stranded there for 2 or 3 days, will they always pay for the hotel. who wants to sleep on teh floor, THAT IS UNCOMFORTABLE and what if the hotel or motel the one will stay at does not have a shuttle to the airport. DO THEY HAVE TO TAKE A CAB?????????? I SAY NO TO A CAB as the rate of getting there is not a set amount, CABS ARE CASH ONLY AND WHY? and or the cab driver may drive me all over creation to rack up a huge fare (Will they do that, they do that and I report them for fraud) and what if I dont have enough cash for the hotel or motel, how will I get there? Will the airport pay for the cab fare? what if the airport wont pay for my hotel or motel, how do I get them to? when I flew home from Chicago and when my flight was cancelled, they only gave me a discount on the hotel, WHY NOT PAY FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am still mad that some airline tickets you cannot change and what if your flight is cancelled and your trip is in veign, IS That true that the Airline ticket insurance will only cover it if there is military duty or death of a family member, I Think one should be in their rights to decline to travel if the trip is in vain due to delays! I have many flight trips planned this summer and will one of them's flight get cancelleD! is it like the airline is not responsible for ones ruined trip when they can waive these rules and fees!! why wont they waive them if one declines traveling if their trip is delayed enough IF THE flight is cancelled due to weather, are they entitled to a refund if the trip is in vain. moreResolved Question: Laptop broken by airline?
Hi! Basically during a recent international flight my work laptop was broken by the airline. When I checked in I was told my carry on luggage, containing my laptop computer was too heavy. It was the right size but about 3 kilos over. I was told to check it in, which I did, although I was nervous about it as the laptop was in it. I pointed this out to the lady at the check in desk but they did not suggest I carry on the laptop and basically did not offer any alternatives. I asked for it to be treated as fragile and nervously left it with them. It was not labelled fragile like I asked when I collected it at the airport on the other side. When I unpacked it it was broken. Its outer shell had a long crack on it and the screen is not working properly. It is completely unusuable. I am really upset as it was work property and I forgot to renew my travel insurance recently. I sent an email of complaint to the airline and they sent a generic cut and paste reply from their terms and conditions saying that as it was fragile they won't assume responsibility. I sent one back saying I accept it was fragile but I felt their employees should have advised me differently. What to do now? (Sorry for venting!) I just wanted to add too that I did ask to bring it on and basically was told check it in or miss the flight which was not an option due to work. So no to all those you have answered in a insulting manner, I was not stupid., I was not given a choice. That is why I'm so annoyed! moreResolved Question: Will I get a refund for my £1500 holiday to Mexico?

Also do you think doctors would prescribe me tamiflu as a preventative medication or is there anywere I could buy it? And I spoke to a doctor and a pharmacist who both advised AGAINST travelling to mexico Thanks everyone for your answers! I really REALLY want to go to Mexico! As for the tamiflu I was thinking of taking it while I was over there eg. start the course when I leave Mexico City, so that if I am infected that I have the best possible chances as the meds are most effective within 48 hours of contamination. I purchased some flights online with United... I got an email saying: Your ticket(s) have been issued as an E-Ticket Your e-ticket was issued •You will receive a confirmation email in a few minutes •To check in for your flight use EasyCheck-inOnline Available 1-24 hours before domestic flights and 2-24 hours before international flights Underneath that is my itinerary ..I haven't received any other email except a confirmation on the purchase of my travel insurance. So where exactly are my tickets? Is it just my itinerary that I print out? Or do I get something to print out after I use the "Easy Check In Online" 24 hours before the flight?? moreVoting Question: Is there travel insurance that protects one against the cost of trip cancellation due to swine flu concerns?
Basically , we are planning a trip to Western Europe from May 18th - August 15th or so... We just bought our tickets days ago, and I am interested in buying travel insurance anyway so that I have medical coverage while on leave from my job. I am concerned now that since the EU released a statement asking for their citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to the US or Mexico, they might also restrict U.S. citizens if it gets worse. If this happens, and we have already bought tickets... will we be left holding the bag? Or in that situation will American Airlines refund our tickets since its outside our control, or will they make us reschedule? If neither, then is there a travel insurance policy that would cover for this type of concern?? Thanks! moreResolved Question: Should I take off and travel Europe for a month or so?
I am a 22 year old male who graduated from college last year. I had a tough time finding a job, so instead I have been working for my dad through our family run insurance business (it has been around for 50 years). I have about $13,000 saved up right now and live at home. I just recently broke up with my girlfriend, who was supposed to move in with me but decided she didn't want to move away from her friends and family (she was a college gf living a state away). I have no expenses right now and nothing tying me down except my job, which I can always get back because it is family run. That being said, I am flying to New York in 3 weeks to help move my sister into her new place (going to college). I have free flights through US Airways until October of this year, because one of my buddies works for the airlines and I am his registered guest. So I fly free, but I have to as a standby passenger. If you were me, would you hop on a flight to Europe and backpack for a few weeks or a month? Or would you save your money, fly home, and move into a place of your own? I need advise and different opinions ...... moreResolved Question: Travel insurance / doctors certificate at 28-30 weeks pregnant, any ideas?!?
I'm going on holiday in 2 weeks, me, hubby and our 17 month old. I will be nearly 28 weeks pregnant when we fly out and nearly 30 weeks when we come back. Only going to Europe so not a long flight. So, firstly, I've checked with the airline and need to get a doctors certificate to fly.... does anyone know if these are easy to get and do you have to pay for them? Secondly, I've spent about an hour looking for travel insurance and loads don't seem to cover pregnancy after 28 weeks. I've had to check the policy wording for each company! I've not had any complications and am not really worried about falling ill, but obviously I want to be adequately covered. Anyone know of any UK insurers who will cover me? I am looking at flights from LHR=BNE for Christmas 09. I've found a very cheap one with Royal Brunei (680 pounds return) which I'm thinking of booking, but I'm not sure - my annual travel insurance doesn't cover a bankrupt airline. I'm planning a trip for a concert from the USA to the UK. Since the whole trip revolves around a performer who, shall we say, doesn't have the best record of remaining healthy... who do you recomend I go through for travel insurance. I'm paying $1600 for tickets, plus probably $2000 in airline. Then there's hotel and food, and the junk every tourist must buy/see. So, I'm very keen on getting a policy that will help with all this if he decides to flake out... Also, what happens if he does? Would most policies reimburse for the tickets and airfare? Or would I still be able to go and they would pay for just the concert tickets? I've never worried about this before. moreResolved Question: is trip cancellation insurance on a credit card really worth it?
My credit card wants to charge me 99$ a year to have trip cancellation insurance. We're planning a trip in 4 months and there is always a chance that something might happen and we wont' be able to go. But if this was the case, is it that easy for your credit card to just reimburse you like that? If I bought friends airline tickets on my credit card and my friends got sick and couldn't travel, would I still get reimbursed if I had trip cancellation insurance? moreResolved Question: Desperately seeking advise on travel insurance nightmare ..?
My horror story begins in March last year when I was travelling from Morocco and my baggage went missing. I reported the matter to a desk at Heathrow which was representing the airline that I was using. They asked me to wait a week and ring a number they gave me. It didn't turn up a week later so I rang this number in Prague. They told me to send them a list of items in my baggage and they would look for it again. I sent them the list. I also rang my insurance company to tell them that I had a claim to make - I filled in the paperwork and sent it off. In the meantime the airline asked me to send me the original paperwork proving that I was travelling with the airline etc. I did this. Since then I have made numerous calls, written letters, to the airline and they keep completely ignoring me. The insurance company in the meantime sent out an assessor who told me that they had a letter from the Airline saying that I hadn't lodged a complaint with them!!!! This is despite numerous conversations and letters. The insurance company now want a letter from the airline saying they will not pay out. This has been going on for nearly a year and I caught in this bureaucratic trap through no fault of my own! What can I do resolve this issue. Please help!! Cari I do have copies of all the correspondence and the report that was lodged with them. So I will write to the insurance company as you suggest moreResolved Question: Can someone help me with a balance sheet and post-closing trial balance?

I have an international ticket with STA Travel, which was originally booked for a Saturday. I was recently informed that the airline cancelled my flight and I was re-booked for the Friday. This means I will incur charges for staying an extra night at my destination in a hotel room. However, I understand that since I had not yet purchased travel insurance that is on me. My question is: I've just found out that the fare I paid for the Saturday flight is $400 more than the flight I'm now on. STA has told me there is no flexibility with the fare difference, even though they don't pay the airline for my ticket until the day I fly. We booked a flight to see my sister over Christmas. My son saw my friend's daughter very frequently before, who then developed chicken pox. As we believed the likelihood of him getting the illness was high and we read stories of children being thrown off the plane, we decided not to go. We didn't want to put other children and pregnant women at risk. Plus we would have been stuck there for 2 weeks until the last signs disappeared. We would have had to take more time off work. One of us would have had to stay there with my son. We rang up our travel insurance to find out if they would pay, they said though, that they would only pay if the doctor advised us against going. We had seen the doctor as I am pregnant too. I am over 20 weeks now and have had chickenpox before so should be immune. About my son the doctor told us to go as he had never heard about airlines not taking children with chickenpox and it wasn't for sure that he gets it. He could only say that the parents were concerned. I don't know what to do. My son hasn't shown any signs yet, but then again it can take 12 to 20 days to come out. It sounds like we might be left out of pocket. moreResolved Question: alright does United Airlines and US AIRWAYS?

I am writing this letter before the election, but deliberately mailing it after November 4. The national election is over. Somebody won. One candidate will take residence in the White House, and one will go back to their well-paying career as a US Senator. But somebody lost, and lost big: the working, and/or investing, taxpaying private citizen. Let’s face facts. No matter which candidate won, nothing substantive is going to change. Failing businesses will continue to be propped up by the federal government, until they became “too big to fail.” Poor executive decisions will be rewarded with government takeovers, funded by working taxpayers. Industry after industry has received corporate welfare for decades now. Remember $12 billion to the airlines after September 11? How about $25 billion to the automakers? Despite this corporate welfare, these industries continue to falter and flail. When you fly a “private” commercial airline, are you treated as if you were that company’s employer? You should be, because they operate on your dime. And now the finance and insurance companies are getting in on the action. Instead of encouraging more effort on the parts of these failed companies, so that they might succeed competitively in a free market, these bail-outs encourage nothing but the decay of our infrastructure. Large companies can be as inefficient and rude as they want—it’s impossible for them to lose money. Why do you think it has become a nightmare to travel anywhere, by plane, train, or automobile, in the US over the last fifty years or so? And if thought buying insurance or going to the bank was fun before, wait until you are being “helped” with your finances by federal agents. But war needs your tax money, too. We’ve got troops stationed in 130 foreign countries; Iraq and Afghanistan are just the most recent “additions” to the protective wing of American blood and treasure. Did either candidate even mention this during the election? Think about it for a minute: 130 countries being watched over by America’s sons, daughters, fathers and mothers. Does the world seem safer or more “democratic” to you? Partisanship has gone beyond absurd to terrifying. The cognitive dissonance is surreal; people will bitterly attack “the other” party or candidate and then, as justification, bring up an issue on which both candidates agree! Both candidates voted for the obscene “bail-out” that was just stolen from our national treasury against the vocal wishes of 85% of Americans. The rhetoric has gone beyond empty—it is a vacuum that sucks rationality and critical thinking from the minds of a panicked public. There was one candidate who actually represented “stopping the madness” in this election cycle: Ron Paul. His candidacy is over, thanks to a media black-out, but the movement he represents is in full swing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8EyGpOU3qM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2JPbQOHEkY For more than a century it's been generally recognized that the best taxes (admittedly this is an expression reminiscent of "the most pleasant death" or "the funniest Family Circus cartoon") are progressive-- that is, proportionate to income. Lately, however, it's become fashionable to question this. Various Republican leaders have trotted out the idea of a flat tax, meaning a fixed percentage of income tax levied on everyone. And in their hearts they may be anxious to emulate Maggie Thatcher's poll tax-- a single amount that everyone must pay. Isn't that more fair? Shouldn't everyone pay the same amount? In a word-- no. It's not more fair; it's appallingly unfair. Why? The rich should pay more taxes, because the rich get more from the government. Consider defense, for example, which makes up 20% of the budget. Defending the country benefits everyone; but it benefits the rich more, because they have more to defend. It's the same principle as insurance: if you have a bigger house or a fancier car, you pay more to insure it. Social security payments, which make up another 20% of the budget, are dependent on income-- if you've put more into the system, you get higher payments when you retire. Investments in the nation's infrastructure-- transportation, education, research & development, energy, police subsidies, the courts, etc.-- again are more useful the more you have. The interstates and airports benefit interstate commerce and people who can travel, not ghetto dwellers. Energy is used disproportionately by the rich and by industry. As for public education, the better public schools are the ones attended by the moderately well off. The very well off ship their offspring off to private schools; but it is their companies that benefit from a well-educated public. (If you don't think that's a benefit, go start up an engineering firm, or even a factory, in El Salvador. Or Watts.) The FDIC and the S&L bailout obviously most benefit investors and large depositors. A neat example: a smooth operator bought a failing S&L for $350 million, then received $2 billion from the government to help resurrect it. Beyond all this, the federal budget is top-heavy with corporate welfare. Counting tax breaks and expenditures, corporations and the rich snuffle up over $400 billion a year-- compare that to the $1400 budget, or the $116 billion spent on programs for the poor. Where's all that money go? There's direct subsidies to agribusiness ($18 billion a year), to export companies, to maritime shippers, and to various industries-- airlines, nuclear power companies, timber companies, mining companies, automakers, drug companies. There's billions of dollars in military waste and fraud. And there's untold billions in tax credits, deductions, and loopholes. Accelerated depreciation alone, for instance, is estimated to cost the Treasury $37 billion a year-- billions more than the mortgage interest deduction. (Which itself benefits the people with the biggest mortgages. But we should encourage home ownership, shouldn't we? Well, Canada has no interest deduction, but has about the same rate of home ownership.) How about social spending? Well, putting aside the merely religious consideration that the richest nation on the planet can well afford to lob a few farthings at the hungry, I'd argue that it's social spending-- the New Deal-- that's kept this country capitalistic. Tempting as it is for the rich to take all the wealth of a country, it's really not wise to leave the poor with no stake in the system, and every reason to agitate for imposing a new system of their own. Think of social spending as insurance against violent revolution-- and again, like any insurance, it's of most benefit to those with the biggest boodle. (See also my page on whether welfare does any good). Who gets to sit on the tax? Come election season, Steve Forbes, among other millionaires, will be pushing plans for a flat tax. These proposals need to be absorbed with a carload of salt. A plan where everyone's taxes are lowered is of course simply a tax cut. Here, once again, the question to ask as a voter and citizen is, what government services do you want to cut? Somehow I don't think Steve is proposing to slash corporate welfare or defense. It's more likely a way to attempt to cut social spending through the back door. People like to hear about tax cuts; they don't like to hear about service cuts, even though they're financially equivalent. A revenue-neutral plan won't change total receipts any-- it'll just redistribute it. Here you have to ask, who gets shafted? You can't exactly make the poor pay more taxes-- they don't have the money. That leaves only one way to flatten the tax rates-- that is, reduce the taxes the rich pay: soak the middle class. If tax rates go down on the rich, and we're not cutting total taxes, the middle c Nice try, Steel Magnolia, but the rich should pay more is EXACTLY what McCain said in the videos I posted. I have just got my new case off of the baggage carosel and its badly damaged. Will i get any compensation from the airline? My travel insurance has a £50 excess and the case cost me £60. moreResolved Question: Help with booking connecting flights- timing?
I am looking to fly from Glasgow to Luton and then from Luton to Sofia. Both flights are with seperate flight companies - Easy Jet and Wizz Air. The times coming back look okay, but going out, my flight would arrive in Luton at 08.10 am, and my next flight departs for Sofia at 11.35 am. Do you think that this allows enough time to collect luggage & check in again etc? Does your travel insurance cover you if you end up missing the second flight due to the first one being delayed? I have never flown like this before - any flight changes I have had have been booked as connecting flights - i.e. with the same airline, so I have not had to bother with collecting baggage etc. Looking for answers from people who have flown with similar arrangements. moreResolved Question: Travel Guard Trip Protection same as International Travel Insurance?

I'm an airline pilot and I"m always on the road. I was wondering if Applecare would cover my machine if it gets damaged during all of my travels. If not are there any insurance providers that would? moreResolved Question: 27 hour flight delay- compensation?
We recently experienced a 27 hour delay to our outbound holiday flight caused by a fault with the aircraft. We were given a food voucher (£5) after a few hours and then eventually put in a hotel overnight. As we lost out on over a days holiday are we due any compensation from the airline? Or will they take the stance that the voucher and hotel is adequate? Also, is it worth trying to claim from our travel insurance, if so, what for? Thanks moreAirline Travel Insurance News
